The Job story suggests a way a person might handle such troubles without spinning completely out of control. At one point it seems as if Job might fall into a well of depression and give up on life. He was able to retain his core values and went on to recover and enjoy life once again.
If anyone seriously believes that the God and Satan characters made a bet over Job's faith then he should also believe that the God and Satan characters are real and that they are making bets on everyone in the world.
Everything that happens to people has already happened to millions of others. There was no God and Satan involved in Job's life and they aren't involved in ours, other than as superstitions.
The relevant question is will we be able to carry on in a sane manner once we get doused with a bucket of crap from out of the blue? Most people need some type of religious crutch to make it through the hard times. Some throw up their hands and jump off of a cliff. No one really knows how they will handle hard situations because things are always changing. What might have been true just last week might be completely different today. Consider all of the people who have been murdered and injured in the past month. I'm sure that their survivors felt completely differently before their disasters. Will they be like Job and recover or will they fall into fatal depression?
Religion worship etc is just a crutch for people who do not want things to change and want things to stay the same.
people pray for stuff to happen rather than putting forth the effort of getting it done over all religion is a crutch that needs to go.
Atheism is a non-prophet organization join today.
