Interestingly, of the members of the Einsatzgruppen and other SS units who survived the war and who were interrogated by Allied inquisitors in preparation for trial at Nuremberg, none of them denied the atrocities of the Holocaust. They were more concerned with trying to deflect responsiblity for the killings. Herman Göering testified to the persecution of German Jews; Gruppenführer Otto Ohlendorf told of Einsatzgruppe D murdering ninety thousand Jews; and Rudolf Hess confessed openly to the gassing of more than a million Jews at his camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
