It is always the example everyone gives, but tbh I don't understand the physics argument leading from E=mc^2 to nuclear fission. Sure, the resulting materials are lighter by the amount of energy that is converted in the explosion divided by c^2, but nukes would still work if that weren't the case, as long as one has the amount of binding energy expected in an atomic nucleus of the size and charge found in nature. It's all in the electrostatic repulsion of protons, no?
