It's disingenuous to say "you'll regret it later" because you won't know, but think of everyone you'll leave behind. Even if you don't realise it, there will be family and friends who will be devastated and will have to live with themselves (probably blaming themselves for not doing more) for the rest of their lives.
It's a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Talk to people, get help, you can still come back from this.
That only worked for so long with me and then I realised that the guilt of knowing that I would make people feel worse actually added to my misery. In the end I needed something to live for and for me that was my research. I wanted to achieve something to make it all worthwhile.
