If I wanted people to worship me, and I was capable of practically anything, my followers would always have everything they need. Maybe not everything they want, but they wouldn't want for basic stuff, and they'd be safe. They'd be able to grow crops in the arctic. They'd be able to live safely in a crime infested city, where the whole community grew up thinking that worshiping me was heresy and worthy of death. Someone grabs a kid and pulls him into a van, then the van falls apart and they're afflicted with crippling headaches.

The only bad thing that happens to my followers would be the consequences of their own doing. They don't get sick, unless they're eating really unhealthy or something.

I exist, and I want people to know I exist. I'm not threatening people with death or torture if they don't follow me. They're just not getting the special privilege that my followers get. Not everyone gets easily forgiven. If you live a crappy life, and try coming to me without enough time to atone for your sins, then too bad. Rapist on his death bed? You have a lot to do in a little time. I might save you if you're about to be murdered, or something.

I'm not perfect, nor would I ever claim to be. I'm like you, but more powerful, and still nice. People would have a reason to worship me. They wouldn't be debating my existence thousands of years after I inspire someone to write stuff down.
