What God did was provide us a physical example of the Spiritual pain He endured to 'forgive our sins.' The reason the final sacrifice was so 'barbaric' was so we may know the level of pain/could phathom the cost experienced by Him.

Just when I think there couldn't possibly be anything else shoved up your ass . . . .
