I'm late to this thread, but I wanted to respond to the OP anyways.

If you're a medicine man (read charlatan) looking to make some money, what is your best shot? I would argue that it is to convince people that they are sick and offer them a cure. And if you want to attract the most people to buy your cure, you need to choose an illness that everyone has.
Human beings are inherently sexual, so that's a great choice. Now let's say you convince people that being sexual, even in thought, is sick and the only cure is your religion. You will have tons of people lining up to buy into your religion.
That's why I think sex comes up in religion so much. Someone probably already pointed it out.
