I've been watching a series about bible history and what some of the rules might have ment and why they were made. In the light of how things where back then i can see why they thought those rules where important.
A lot had to do with making sure to know who's child was who's because they had no paternity testing. Since most societies are patriarchal then it was important for the men to know that their lineage was actually theirs.
Also having as many babies as possible was a neccessity at the time thus homosexuality was bad as was sodomy (anal sex doesn't produce children.... who knew?).
Marriage seemed more about ownership than anything else since a man was not in nearly as much trouble if he raped a non married woman as opposed to one that was married.
Today of course we have nearly over run the planet with humans and we can determine the paternity of a child and course rape is bad all around even if you rape your wife.
