I breast fed both girls in public. I did it in restaurants, in parks, and on planes. Can't remember it being an issue, though I did wear a nursing bra and chose my shirts carefully. The idea is to feed the child, not put on a show.
Nor only is it good for the baby, it makes life easier for the mother. Pumping and bottling is not really a good solution. Milk goes bad if not refrigerated and momma leaks and eventually goes dry if not milked regularly. Nor to mention that it hurts breasts to skip a meal.
