I agree with the first part, since they cherry pickers of the governments now show their real colors. I don't agree with the second part, since there never was a sentiment of everyone being welcome and it certainly hasn't been communicated.
The EU I voted for in 1994 was based on human rights and the four liberties. It has turned into a neocon capitalist experiment since then. By expanding too quickly with basically only taking an economic look at the candidates.
And it's not the biggest crisis of it's kind since the war. There was 1956, 1968 and 1992. These are at least the years we, in my country, remember, since they involved shooting wars at our borders and the influx of hundreds of thousands of refugees.
