Perhaps both play a factor? I'm not a criminal psychologist but I can't help think that a sexual predator would be draw to a career where they have access to potential victims, would be considered beyond suspicion and be protected in the event of getting caught. This seems to me the simpler explanation but I'll defer to those who've done the research.

It would be hard to confirm that, considering that pedophilia is an under-reported crime. I'm sure they will say so, it gives a nice cover for their behavior, but how could we know for sure?
