Someone pointed out recently that Daesh have a core membership of around 35,000 in Syria and Iraq, but the surrounding Islamic nations have around 5 million military personnel.
If the locals powers wanted to, they could likely crush the group - except for the insurgent members who would hide and then attack like cowards - in a matter of weeks with a co-ordinated ground campaign. But, of course, the situation and the chaos suits their long term plans.
