"What did your last slave die of?" is a pretty common smart-ass phrase made towards somebody who's being bossy to you. It works better in real time, and even seems less insensitive. That being said, I know I would never use it, but that's probably due to my sensitivity, having been brought up in the US. I can imagine someone being from another country, and the intent of the phrase being to keep a bossy person in check, not thinking this would be as insensitive as it came across, especially in a retelling. And if you had not heard the phrase used in context before, it would come off insensitive.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
