Because, in this case, the GOP made a determined effort, starting in the '60s, to swing the conservative Southern Democrats -- a bigoted and obnoxiously Protestant block of voters -- into their fold. And the Republicans have pandered to conservative Christians ever since, pushing one hot button social issue after another to keep the money and votes rolling in but also careful not to really deliver on anything so they can continue to stoke the fires of conservative Christian discontent while blaming others for their failure to act.
[Edited to add]: It's amusing how often it's happened that, when the GOP actually tries to deliver on behalf of their conservative Christian constituents (usually at the state level), their efforts run afoul of the courts.
BTW, Evie, who were you before the name change? Member name changes always fuck me up.
