No, I'm not nostalgic for the 13th Century, but it seems only fitting if I'm to duel someone whose mind is essentially stuck there. Guns wouldn't be fair. As often as he shoots off his mouth, he'd likely shoot himself in the foot or blow off his own dick. And we wouldn't want people to think that Louisiana's governor is an incompetent idiot.

The really scary thing is that, as nuts as Jindal is, his craziness barely registers on the national scale.

I'm sure he'd be doing better in terms of visibility and mainstream party support if he and the state's GOP hadn't made such a mess of Louisiana's finances by tying everything to the price of oil after slashing taxes. He's hardly a poster boy for financial responsibility and would just embarrass the party that is so hard to embarrass.

Besides, he's brown and of no help in pandering to the Hispanic vote.

Why is it that the political parties that are all for the rich getting richer and seem to have no empathy for the poor whatsoever - always seem to also be more religious and bigoted?

Because, in this case, the GOP made a determined effort, starting in the '60s, to swing the conservative Southern Democrats -- a bigoted and obnoxiously Protestant block of voters -- into their fold. And the Republicans have pandered to conservative Christians ever since, pushing one hot button social issue after another to keep the money and votes rolling in but also careful not to really deliver on anything so they can continue to stoke the fires of conservative Christian discontent while blaming others for their failure to act.

[Edited to add]: It's amusing how often it's happened that, when the GOP actually tries to deliver on behalf of their conservative Christian constituents (usually at the state level), their efforts run afoul of the courts.

BTW, Evie, who were you before the name change? Member name changes always fuck me up.
