My usual reply to that argument is "Great - so we'll keep the buildings. They're all the tourists get to see."

Turn them into hospitals or something else useful.

But the buildings will not be imbued with the same aura if there's no royals in it (at least potentially).

France gets tourists, and they introduced their royals to Madame Guillotine.  That is what people do who have reached the pinnacle of civilization.  We can know the French have reached that level from the fact that they make Champagne.
