I don't think it's so much as who created christianity as much as it was about who was the last sect standing with the most money to peddle for influence way back with Constantine. In the blood thirst following the Council of Nicea wherein bold soldiers and men of the loving god rode and marched forward and put to blade and fire other christian sects and their literature anything said at this time is idle speculation. What a set up for the early church world conquest and domination just handed over to the ambitious, crafty and greedy. The major sects that had to be put down were the gnostics and fringe gnostic cults.
The discovery of The Gnostic Nag Hammadi Codices was awesome in that it presents a different story of a, not born of a virgin, teacher and it's definitely a different construct of who Jesus was and reflected that Jesus taught reincarnation. So once again you have unoriginal material being presented based on Eastern thought, but one which differs considerably with the gospels. If one can assume that there was a movement that revolved around a philosopher leader I get the impression that they would be classified more as the Bohemians, Beats or Hippies of their time. This is exactly what the early church had to put down. As The Nag Hammadi's presentation of the teachings of Jesus were inclusive of the dangerous teachings of reincarnation you had to manipulate the hope of reincarnation and instead offer a punish or reward system for the afterlife to exert control over the common people as well as your nobility and monarchy.

The world is a dangerous place to live - not because of the people who are evil but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
