Terminating insurance coverage due to age (26) means that the individual automatically qualifies for COBRA continuation of coverage through the employer (assuming 20 or more employees). If elected within 63 days from the last date of medical coverage, COBRA coverage continues for 18 months. After the 18 months, if disabled, the individual then qualifies for Medicare no matter what age.
If COBRA was not offered by the employer then the employer would be on the hook and have to back date the effective date (payment for coverage would still have to be made). If not elected by the individual within the 63 days COBRA is not available.
Payment for the COBRA premiums should not be an issue. Loans are readily made available to these individuals/family's from lending institutions. Some medical institutions will make the CORBA payment for the individual to insure that the medical treatment will be paid for through insurance.
