There seems to be a new one that's got a lot of attention, starts with a C but can't remember the name.Choline is what you're thinking of, and the category would be Nootropics.
If you have, what did your think?
Yes there are lots of Nootropics, ranging from herbal supplements to pills. I currently take Modafinil which is on the heavier spectrum of Nootropics.
They work. However, the heavier you go, or the more nootropics you take at once(because you can stack them on top of eachother), the worse the brain decline after you stop [may] be. Brain decline as in - if you are operating at a high level with the drugs, take them away, you will feel cognitively below normal for a while. I think it's worth it. I mean even though modafinil is on the heavier level of them, it has minimal side effects, which is why it is gaining popularity. My personal experience with it for me, is that it increases my: Memory, focus(not too much but I also take ADD medication for that specifically), Creativity, Energy(I will be researching sometimes on the internet from when I get home from school until 12 AM), but most importantly I make a lot more connections I otherwise would have missed. Like I can detect patterns much more efficiently.
I have been researching on this category of drug for the past week or so because I was curious since I was taking Modafinil already. It's pretty interesting, you should read up on it, there are a lot of over the counter nootropics you can get that do in fact work. For starters, one that a lot of people use that is pretty light that already has a lot of different nootropics combined in order to create a nootropic stack in only one pill is called "Alpha Brain".
