Lucas was a huge fan of Joseph Campbell's work, and one of the last big interviews of Campbell was conducted by Bill Moyers on Skywalker Ranch. It's an interesting transcription to read in book form, or to watch as a series of shows, called "The Power of Myth."
They're not bastardizations of the Hero's Journey, they are all stories told using the framework of the Hero's Journey. If they were a bastardization of it, the Hero's Journey would have to have been its own story at one point, and it has never been. The Hero's Journey is the armature upon which the sculpture is created.
