Sin is equally the dumbest and most insidious invention created by humanity.

After all, its creation only came about because men were unnecessarily uncomfortable with what other people were doing, especially when those actions were doing no harm to anyone in particular. Having a dislike for something does not equate to being personally harmed by others personal actions.

Honestly, sin seems nothing more than a way to wrap the economic reality of the time in morality, mixed with the usual ancient peoples' woo.

You're poor, but poverty is actually a good thing.
You're cold and hungry, but be thankful for what you have.
You're horny, but wanton breeding is bad (because it's wasteful).
Etc.

As shitty as your lives are now, you'll be rewarded with more than the Romans even could imagine if you stick with the program, and those that are responsible for your plight will be punished terribly.

It's just obvious that it served a dual purpose - explain why things suck to the masses (all the shit you hate is actually good! And everything you really want to do is bad! Whee!), and create a controllable population because, well, religion IS politics.

All of the typical theist hoopla regarding it is idiotic and laughable.
