That's not true per biblical practices.  The girl's father took a cloth and rammed it up his daughter's vagina, breaking her hymen and pulling out the bloody cloth.  That was visible proof that she was a virgin just before she got married for the first time.  He then kept the bloody cloth and would produce it as evidence if her husband claimed that she wasn't a virgin.  The Mary story omits that part because it doesn't mention her father.  

That is disgusting
