The word, "spiritual" is not well defined and as such, I'm sure it means different things to different people. If I hear someone say they are spiritual but not religious, I take it to mean they have a belief which is not dogmatic but may not pass the muster of the scientific method. Additionally, they probably have a profound, emotional investment in this belief. It is probably a personal thing in that while it is important to the believer, they feel no compulsion to push their belief onto other people. They might try to sell their belief to others with good intentions but they wouldn't think of committing violence on those who don't share their beliefs or discriminating against them. Another words, benign religion.
That is probably not entirely accurate but it's what I think of when I hear someone say they are, "spiritual but not religious." It's also where I think the future of religion of lies.
Like it or not, we cannot be the Vulcans of Star Trek unless we take an active role in our own evolution and rewire our brains. We may indeed choose to do that but until and unless we do, we are emotional creatures. As such, "spiritual but not religious" is where I think we will head next.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
