Muslims, on the other hand, are free to interpret the texts any way they like. If they interpret them literally and live by those principles, then they will be backwards, ignorant and violent. Same with Christians. Or they can cherry pick/interpret and be decent people, like many do.
I think if all Muslims were like Reza Aslan no one would have a problem. He basically said that religion are just symbols and metaphors for those who believe in the divine, and that he happens to identify with Islamic symbols, but he also admitted religion is man made. Interesting position I think. I've met some religious people, mostly Christians, who have that position.
