Think of a poker player who has been playing the same hand for several years. It's low stakes each round, but it's been going round and round the table for ages. Everyone has watched him already put in all millions of pounds, plus his car keys, the deeds to his house and even several of his limbs.
He has laid his cards on the table face down hours ago, he doesn't need to keep looking at them. He knows he has the winning hand.
It's back round to him again. Is he going to fish around in his pocket for anything that's going to keep him in the hand, or will he actually properly look at his hand again, to check if it's really as strong as he thinks?
