Truthfully, religion did influence the laws of society simply by the books they chose to add/keep in their sacred text and which they decided to toss. It was a way to make the society of their choosing. It isn't as if there was some perfect society set down for any of us. Instead the different cultures found the readings they wanted to keep that would mold the image of their perfect society and then used religion to make it happen.
The problem is the society they chose wasn't perfect and treated large segments of that society as less then human because those were the rules of the day. Many religions have been ok with changing parts of them as time as gone on but they still hold on to the basic tenant and continues to form our societal makeup. Hence leads to our problem. Morals and honesty do not come from religion as we can see by looking at the church
