I grew up in a country with compulsory military service. Consequently our army was sh*t, it was a giant waste of time for young people trying to find proper work, or start a family and consequently anyone with any sense was doing their best to avoid it - usually by bribing doctors and/or simulating a chronic illness.
Personally, I decided I wasn't going to put myself through this totalitarian nonsense, so I left the country. The army looked for me for a bunch of years, but then they thought better of it and scrapped the mandatory service in favor of smaller, but better funded professional army.
But anyway - forcing everyone into gun-training, so that half of the population can keep using their toys for a while longer - yeah, that sounds like that famous American "Freedum"...
