I find that scary too, but you look at human history religion worldwide never completely stops religious beefs or acts of cruelty to outsiders. Humans would do better to challenge themselves to think about what is really going on. Our species and evolution produce both empathy and cruelty and there really is no magic reason those things happen. It isn't advocating acts of cruelty, just a fact that there is no magic reason humans do what they do.
Indeed a suitably intelligent and evil theist can certainly use the texts to excuse their actions whatever they are. The texts are so written that if you want peace and love, that's in there, if you want killing and hate that is also there.
