It has to do with Jewish law. According to the Mosaic Law. If a man dies and leaves no children, his brother must fuck his widow and bear children for him. Onan did not want to father children that legally would belong to his brother not to himself. God killed him for breaking that law.
How can anybody be safe from a murderous god? Somebody here called him a draconian psychopath. A man can trick his brother out of his birthright and deceive his father into giving it to him, and god will honor him, but let a man reach out to keep the Ark of the Covenant from toppling and god will strike him dead. You never know.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.
