The problem of evil/suffering when it comes to children

The worst I've heard from Christians over horrible deaths of children like described in the OP is, "Well, god just needed more angels in Heaven". If that's the case, why doesn't the Biblical God character just create more angels?

It's always statements such as that which are meant to be so cute, so innocent, and so reassuring that are the most perniciously insensitive, and that's the Christian heart for you. It is so emotional that any attempt to unpack it will make you look like the monster, when it's the attitude which you are addressing which is, comforting or not, also truly monstrous! But we should do it when it's not at risk of our jobs, because nobody will do more to better protect children while what happens to them is regarded as any less bad than it really is.
