These men directly sinned against God by trying to tempt Him, God allowed the temptation so as not to mess with free will of man in these instances. The only true free will we have is to choose between God and hell, obedience or disobedience, eternal life or eternal hell, Jesus or ourselves. In the Old Testament the God character never referred to himself as having multiple personalities. He stuck with being a murderous lunatic.

In the New Testament the Jesus character claimed to be just like the God character. He was a lunatic as well. He never did anything godly. He never created anything. He did do some magic tricks but they weren't up to the ones that Moses did. He never said that he was God, only that he was as crazy as God. If he was still wiggling on the cross the fairy tale might be believable.
