There is a story in "The Gulag Archipelago" of a group of academics who had analysed their daily Gulag rations. They understood that their calorie intake was not sufficient to sustain them, given the amount of physical work they were expected to do.
They knew they were going to die very soon. So they formed a lecture club, so that they could learn as much as possible before they died.
Every night, an academic would deliver a lecture to their fellows on their specialist subject. They carried on lecturing, and every night the audience got smaller and smaller.
What magnificent humanity.
