You know as well as I do exactly what you were referring to when you made the remark. Quit twisting shit to suit your own agenda because it makes you look like a fool. It is clear that anyone can see by your writing style that you have at least average, if not, above average intelligence. There is nothing slow about your intellect. Furthermore, being illiterate or dyslexic is not an indicator of being "retarded". I'm illiterate in Italian. Doesn't mean that I'm "retarded". My fiancee is dyslexic, but he knows college algebra. Doesn't mean that he's "retarded".

Definition of retarded
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/retarded
- : slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress
I made no bones about my personal back ground, nor have i tried to hide all that I personally struggled with academically. Even if the word Retarded has fallen out of vogue it still accurately describes where I came from (Illiterate/Dyslexic/Learning disabled/SLD etc..) and if you were to open your eyes (or maybe you can't see from your high horse) I did not insult anyone, I used the word to describe myself you self righteous bung. So whether you like it or not, whether you have a Downs kid or not my use of the word is for me to decide, not you.
You don't get to pull the retard card just because you know one. You have to be one, and I are one! Just ask around if you don't believe me!
You used the word as an intentional dig on yourself, which in turn, is a dig on people who actually have MR. And because I called you out on it, you're now trying to move your goalposts. And no - I don't like it. And yes - it's for the exact reason that BECAUSE I have a 20 year old with Down syndrome, who's cognitive functioning is the same as that of a second grader, I'm gonna call you out on it because, again, you insult people who actually do have MR. So yes, when you use it in an intentional, derogatory, manner, whether towards yourself or someone else, I will decide to bring it up. This isn't for you to tell me what I can or cannot discuss and in no way implies that I'm being "self righteous" about it. I'm simply pointing out your ignorance.
That means all the examples you gave and the ones I gave fall under the proper clinical use of that word.
Now that does not mean one can not accel in other areas. You are confusing Retardation with sever Mental retardation, which affects all areas of life. That's what happens when emotions define words for you. You see what you want to see rather than what the actual word communicates. In the 80's (when I wore that label in school) being retarded was a legitimate diagnosis. one that was quickly picked up and used to bully slower kids, but never the less it was a clinical term that described a legitimate condition.
It was a label and title given to me all my school life. Teachers used this term, Parents used it, all of the kids used it, and I learned to accept it. Yet it did not define who I was. It simply meant I could not learn like other people did. My mind worked differently and responded better to different inputs than what they taught in school. All that I am now I had to teach myself, figure out on my own how things worked, and then learn how to work in a world designed for 'the rest of you.' That said their is still over lap. places where I lack (spelling and grammar are just 2 examples) because they can't be visualized, it's just stuff that one has to remember.
So when you 'good people' remind me of my spelling and grammar short commings, it is in the same vain that the 'normies' called people like me retarded. You all are attacking or judging me or the content of my work based on a academic mastery of written English.
Which a failure in basic spelling or grammar is a great indicator (and repeated failure is evidence) of a failed mastery of the written language. To which this failure this quickly identified as:" slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress" (in far fewer words) is used to push back rather than addressing content. This push back is meant to, cast doubt on my ability to render accurate content, or is used to dismiss me or my accounts as being unworthy of consideration or validation.
Which is at the core of a bully's use of the word retard. Even if you all are 'too smart' to see this I do. I've seen it All my life. so I make no bones in helping you commit to use of the new "N-word/R-word" as it were. even if you yourself don't have the back bone to use it.
Again that is why I called myself a "retard." Because even if that particular person was to pussy footed to use the word that is what was meant. Your problem princess is with that person not me. All I did was bring to the light, someone elses ill intent.
