If you're made redundant in Germany then you get paid 2/3rds of your previous wage to give you time to find a new job that is suitable for your skill set. It's not in anyone's interests for highly skilled people to just take anything they can in order to survive.
Tax is really high in Germany but so is the standard of living. You know that the tax isn't being wasted on the military in the same way that it is in the UK and US.
