Men and women are equal only for very special, restricted definitions of equal.
If men and women were equal, men would nurse infants and women would be more desperate to pick up men in bars.
In my worldview, and oddly enough, men and women are most interested in the same thing: to get our genes into the future as the next generation. Men will say and do anything to make this happen, including admitting that they will say and do anything to make this happen. Each existing persons father was successful in this quest. Unsuccessful fathers are not represented.
Sex is simply the doorway through which humans must pass in order to reach the future. Women have better means of selling access to that doorway. They'd be fools (pragmatically speaking) not to demand as much as they could for that ultimately valuable access.
They are the center of a universe albeit a very small one.
