Well they are now, but that wasn't always the case. 800 years ago, the Germanic and Slavic tribes sacrificed humans for the fertility rites, and animals such as the easter bunny served as important fertility symbols in these societies. The belief in the easter bunny has merely become more benign over the centuries.
Interesting I wasn't aware of the unpleasant history of the Easter Bunny
