The thing is though, which literal reading of genesis? The bible has two creation myths, gen. 1 and the garden of eden in gen 2 & 3. These two myths flat out contradict each other, even in Cherubims 'non contradictory' kjv, so if you plump for one you have to reject the other, unless you argue the perfect god took a mulligan on the first creation and started over.
It's all one story, I'm surprised a smart person like you can't see that.
