Who's giving the rapists a pass? They're not the ones being used as the holy example, so they're not being discussed.
It makes no difference if the mob was gay or not. As a parent, your first and foremost duty is to protect your children at all costs. I would rather sacrifice myself to an angry mob to give my family a chance to escape than I would offer up my children. But I guess I'm not holy enough to rot my brain into thinking that Lot is somehow a virtuous man.
