I know I'm late to this party. I'm a grammar Nazi, I admit it. My Great-Aunt was an English Professor - I love proper English.
But I try to limit my corrections, I really do.
I suppose that correcting grammar could be racist. But I see terrible grammar and spelling online from folks of all races . . . Correcting grammar, for me, is more elitist. I can see the temptation clearly - to correct grammar and spelling because I know better, because I'm better educated, so it makes ME feel better. It can easily be snobbish. So I limit my corrections to teaching situations - helping students write research papers, etc.
And . . . here, of course. I must confess that I love to correct a preacher's grammar and spelling. I mean, they're here to try to convince us that they have the "truth", they are superior and we're deluded sinners. Yep. Pointing out that they have the writing skills of a 3rd grader - - now, that's when it's FUN to be snobbish.
