I came across it while helping my oldest son on one of his homework assignments, but yes, the US government does accept charitable contributions to reduce the US debt.

you would be (slightly) reducing the rate of increase of the US debt.

Point well taken!  It's amazing how the subliminal messages of government websites can influence one's brain!  Once again, Science has shown me the light.
