When I was volunteering at the hospice org for HIV people, my assignment, an admitted prostitute herself, noted my quizzical expression when another woman she knew came into the program. The other one was, even to my severely untrained gay male eye, not a looker at all (oofda, makes me sound piggy, don't it?). T took me aside and explained there is demand for everyone in their profession. She illustrated it by noting men with 'hot' wives still pursue prostitutes too, and frequently the last thing they are looking for is anyone that reminds them of what they already have at home. Hence, T's friend has a viable economic path in that world too.
