I'm of the mind that until the investigative apparatus is perfected, punishments should not be permanent. It's the same reason I'm against the death penalty.
Even if we could be 100% certain of guilty 100% of the time, I would still be against castration and the death penalty. Those are both counted as cruel and unusual in my book.
