I don't advocate false hope, but it doesn't only bring pain to believe there's an afterlife. It brings delusion and misconception, but the point of an afterlife is for comfort in the face of death and the death of loved ones.
A friend of mine died a couple years ago, from alcohol and prescription drugs. When I went to his funeral, his wife was insistent that he was in heaven.
The thought of saying, "No, he's just gone," didn't cross my mind. I just nodded.
But she was hurting anyway. Notwithstanding her belief in the afterlife, she was hurting. And I was hurting. It hurts everyone when you lose someone you love, no matter what you believe. Is believing in an afterlife really a comfort?
