Firstly, Punishment for rape is not stoning!
Secondly, stoning isn't issued as casually as you think. It is so rare that perhaps occurs once a decade. Usually when it occurs it is for the wrong reasons, or the community lacked in proper education.
Stoning is issued when adultery is committed provided 4 witnesses watched the event at that exact moment at that exact location. Hence, the only time this can be issued if something like a porn production was conducted and the producers and the director had a "change of heart".
Now the religion provides various alternatives to adultery, they could of considered divorce, second marriage, ...etc. They could of taken a vacation to a secular nation and made love. Instead they did their act knowing full well of the consequences and at the same time were caught or witnessed by 4 or more people.
Why stoning?
Adultery is a negative vibe in the community that destroys families. It can create illegitimate children who grow up with a chip on their shoulder and stir trouble in the community. Essentially the whole community is hurt by it.
As a result, provided that FOUR WITNESSES can testify that the act occurred; stoning is the only punishment that the whole community can get involved in. Everyone in the community can have a contribution in getting rid of this negative vibe and stand by the affected family and give them support. This is a firm stance on this issue, and people can not be cowards and do stuff to their spouse behind their backs.
You may think all this is barbaric, but if you were ever affected as result of adultery you would fully support this kind of punishment. Affected victims should be supported and backed by the community.
Its like murder. If someone murders a close family member, you will demand the murderer be sentenced to death.
