A 524 error implies not a problem with CloudFare. It's a time out error meaning CloudFare connected with the server but the connection was too slow and the connection eventually timed out.

I'm also getting occasional 522 errors which means CloudFare was unable to reach the server at all.

Generally these things are a case of server overload though I have seen a few times when it was a DDoS attack.
