His religious upbringing probably has played a role, since it painted him in an even tighter corner and possibly giving him an ulterior motif to get rid of what he perceived to be his inner devils. It's still repression being responsible for his deeds, and you find it with every religious nutjob blowing off at some point. Religion is just one way to justify what they do.
Exactly my point -- it's more likely correlation than causation in this case, I think.
