Why have a gun?

Why have a gun?
For when armed dirtbags break into your home. Glad to see a homeowner win.

Never felt the need for a gun in 67 years, seems to me they cause more problems than they solve!
The meek shall inherit the Earth, the rest of us will fly to the stars.

Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud ..... after a while you realise that the pig likes it!

Most people never need a fire extinguisher either.

But when you do - nothing else works quite as well..

Oh, well, you never know when will Russia or some other country attack the U.S., and people will need to defend themselves with the weapons they have at hand.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I find not lighting fires somewhat helpful, as well.

Sure. Avoiding hot spots is a good thing.

But sometimes the fire comes to you.

Anyone who wishes to live without firearms has the right to do so. I choose differently.

I live on the assumption that people can be assholes and expect the worst of behavior from them.

Running quite literally is not an option for me.

And guns are not only for home burglaries but also for organizations like Deacons for Defense and Justice. Formed in 1964 they are a group of African-American war veterans who do not believe in passive resistance as Dr. King did but instead in direct action with the Ku Klux Klan when federal authorities refuse to intervene in or prosecute Klan lynchings, burnings, and beatings.

Dr King also knew the value of firearms. He did after all apply for a concealed carry permit.

Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

RE: Why have a gun?
What is the ratio of the number of occasions when gun owners shot someone (including themselves) by accident to the number of gun owners who arguably shot someone in legitimate self defense??

I just realize that is a terrible question. Since gun owners who shot themselves clearly pose a mortal danger to themselves, Every gun owner who shot himself shot himself in legitimate self defense.
