I think it's a chronic failure to be able to see other peoples' points of view. He is projecting himself onto us.
I guess he feels if such holy or perfect goals of religion exist in holy scriptures, than surly greedy humanity couldn't write such "eternal sweetness and perfection of self sacrifice". So, surrendering to such "higher feelings" he see that its his duty to educate selfish masses with holy wisdom.
He feels that he is advocating holy/divine/perfect order. Cute and innocent in my opinion, even if its annoying. Its like vegetarians or especially vegans who preach order of non violence.
