To those who are defending the present design: there is no question that the design is horrible and "wrong" in every way. It isn't designed to be an icon, it's just a scaled down version of the previous logo - with no attempt to make it look visually appealing. This is how it would look if I simply did the same thing to the current logo: As you can see it looks similar to this: because all I've done is cropped the logo and resized it. It is god-awful.
The versions I propose: or or are all based on the "atom" logo. You could of course base it directly off the topic icons:
But the problem with that is that doesn't scale-down to 16x16 as nicely, and you end up with something that looks like a flower rather than an atom:
