That's not the point of voting third party in this election. Voting third party increases their popular vote, and paves the way for more third party engagement (access to election funds, etc.) in future elections. Nobody voting third party actually thinks their candidate is going to win.

Firstly, no vote is a waste. Secondly, the lesser of two evils isn't elected via the popular vote, so in some cases, voting third party instead of the "lesser of two evils" is a perfectly "safe" vote. For example, Clinton is all but guaranteed to win Massachusetts. People in Massachusetts who don't like either Trump or Clinton can vote for a third party, increase their vote share, and not affect the outcome of the election in terms of electoral college votes.
